UBUNTU: Together in Song
Presented By Latrobe Valley Chior & Play It Forward
A colourful, energetic, and dynamic multicultural choir and arts event featuring UBUNTU Africa Graduates of the African Children’s Choir alongside the Latrobe Valley Choir and many others will perform at Gippsland Performing Arts Centre on Saturday 17 May 2025.
Over the past 35 years, The African Children’s Choir (ACC) has transformed the lives of over 54,000 children from Africa’s slums by providing them with an education. Based in Kampala, these children acquire skills that empower them to break the cycle of poverty they were born into. Upon returning to Uganda, choir members continue their education at Music For Life schools and universities. They maintain strong ties to their families and communities, positioning them to drive real change in their society.
The UBUNTU AFRICA features a group of gifted singers, musicians, and dancers who were once part of the globally acclaimed African Children’s Choir. As young children, they performed on prestigious stages such as Carnegie Hall and the London Palladium, and for distinguished audiences including US Presidents and Nobel Prize winners, alongside stars such as Will Smith, Bob Geldof, Alicia Keys, and Annie Lennox.
Now freshly graduated from high school through the sponsorship of the African Children’s Choir, these talented young adults, aged 18 to 20, are ready to make a significant impact back in their villages. As they gear up for university and their futures as leaders in Uganda, they are excited to share with Australia how their dreams are being realized through this inspirational tour.
WORKSHOPS
Play It Forward and Latrobe Valley Choir are proud to present and work in collaboration with the UBUNTU Africa organisation KWAYA. Between May 13 and 17 we will organise a series of fun and inclusive multicultural workshops offering up a diverse range of Arts and Culinary based experiences to give everyone the opportunity to hear and share incredible stories through song and dance.
We want to invite all members of the Latrobe Valley community to be a part of exchanging experiences and helping to build a more connected and engaging community whilst developing skills, confidence, friendships, and positive physical & mental wellbeing. By bringing together members of the community to learn, sing, and create art, it will inspire people to engage in broader conversations representing their love of living in the valley, along with its trials, tribulations, and transitions. We aim to bring about positive
behavioural change and practices to promote healthy relationships, inspire confidence, and reduce social isolation The project will culminate with a big concert at the Town Hall at the Gippsland Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, 17 May, featuring the UBUNTU Choir, along with the Latrobe Valley Choir, Voices of Moonee Valley, and other special guests and local artists.
